Chavez brothers acquitted

Two brothers, charged with numerous counts of resisting arrest andbattery on police officers at a Sacramento State football game in 1999,were acquitted of all charges Wednesday.

Gustavo and Miguel Chavez were arrested after a fight broke out at theSept. 18, 1999 Causeway Classic on the Sac State campus. In the SuperiorCourt trial, two campus police officers testified against the brothers,but the jury acquitted both men of all charges.

According to The Sacramento Bee, the forewoman of the jury said, “Ipersonally believe that the officers used excessive force. They weredirty.”

The arrests were reported in The State Hornet in 1999. During the courtcase, the Chavez brothers subpoenaed the newspaper’s unpublishedphotographs and notes. A Sacramento County superior court judgeeventually ruled in favor of the newspaper which had invoked theCalifornia Shield Law and declined to turn over the unpublishedmaterials.
