Basketball Blowout 2001
March 13, 2001
A Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dog CD provided the motivational music to compete, but nearly one-third of last year?s participants showed up for the 2001 B-Ball Blowout skills competition in the Hornet South Gym last Thursday evening.
The one-day hoop extravaganza included a slam-dunk, free-throw, and one-on-one contest, a three point shootout and a half court shot for cash. Conducted by the CSUS Recreational Sports Program, this event involved mostly freshman and sophomore students and fraternity members who played in the Spring five on five Intramural Basketball League from Feb. 12 through March 6.
“I am surprised by the lack of turn out of fifty players,” intramural supervisor Brian Chavez said. “It may be because many people are drained from the school blood drive going on this week.”
The poor attendance could be attributed to changing last year?s successful event from a Wednesday to a Thursday this year, according to Nu Alpha Kappa member Felipe Olvera.”Unfortunately we cannot schedule at will because we have to share the facility use,” Chavez said. “This is why we don?t have many commuter students playing.”
The slam-dunk contest champion of the night was Eric Earls, who won by jumping up and grabbing the rim of the hoop, swinging underneath and dunking on the other side. Earls? only competitor was Goose, who challenged Earls by dunking the ball off a bounce thrown from the three-point line, but failed to complete more than one true dunk.
“The players haven?t been allowed to dunk a ball in the gym all season because the hoops are used by the school basketball team,” special event coordinator Pilar Arroyo said. “This competition gives them their opportunity.”
Dan Bayla won the free-throw contest by shooting 100% from the free throw line, making 10 out of 10.
Bryan Snitselaar won both the three-point shootout and the half-court shot contest. He made six of 10 shots from three-point range to advance out of the first round and then swished seven of 10 in the finals. Snitselaar?s two shots from half court won him 13 dollars, which was accumulated from the $1 participation fee to enter.
The winner of the seemingly endless one-on-one matches was Adrian Williams.
Every person who attended the events received a 2001 B-Ball Blowout t-shirt and the winners will have their names posted up in the Hive.
