Thousands of Sacramento State students flocked to the University Ballroom in search of internships and new jobs at the Job Fair on Feb. 21. This annual event featured more than 100 companies that were searching for job applicants in a variety of fields.

Many students, especially senior and graduate students, were looking at companies that would fit their majors.

“My goal is to put my foot of a greater company,” said Andrea Johnson, a graduating senior majoring in human resources.

Johnson is not alone in looking for jobs that would connect to her major after graduation. Giovianne Washington, a graduate student majoring in social work, agrees. “[I am looking for] job leads, maybe some future positions open when I graduate,” Washington said.

Among some of the companies in attendance were Macy?s, Federal Express, E*Trade, the United Parcel Service and Kaiser. There were also several branches of law enforcement at the event, including the California Department of Corrections.

“[The prison] is a very structured environment. We are responsible for the care of the prisoners,” said Officer Jim Yamamoto, the North Region Recruiter for the department. Yamamoto also said that students who want to work in the prison system can expect to work an eight-hour shift, but with three different shifts. Other law enforcement companies in attendance included the FBI, Solano County Sheriff?s Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff?s Department, Sacramento Police Department, the US Navy and the US Army.

Some students want to find a job that pays well.

“Basically, [I want to] start putting applications. Trying to get hired. Get some money,” said Thomas Williams, a senior majoring in criminal justice, who said that he was focusing on getting his master?s degree in multicultural education.

Another student, Lakhijit Sarang, said, “I?m looking for an internship or full time job.” Sarang is also a graduate student currently majoring in computer science and has received a Bachelor of Science degree in electronics.

The same applies to Adrianna Ramirez, a senior majoring in finance. “I?m looking for an internship and full time job in insurance,” Ramirez said.”We are looking for people with interpersonal and general office skills in training positions,” said Stephen Leas, a representative for Allstate/Encompass Insurance. Leas is also a graduate student at Sac State focusing on getting his master?s degree in career counseling.

Other students just want to find a part-time job while they continue studying at Sac State. Daniel Greely, who works for the Defense Commissory Industrial Agency, said that there are several jobs open.

“(The company) jobs are commissary management. We are located near Navy and Army bases.” Greely said.

Greely also said that women and minorities are strongly needed.

Among the many companies looking for part time employers were the Doubletree Hotel, Target, Mervyn?s, and Toys R Us.

More information about any open jobs can be found at the Hornet Foundation office in the third floor in the Bookstore.
