Rock raps at round table interview

Superstar comedian Chris Rock participated in a round table interview with several college newspapers, including the State Hornet, to discuss life, love and his latest film, “Down to Earth.” The film debuted in theaters nationwide Friday.

Rock is a Grammy and Emmy winning comedian, whose career includes stand-up comedy, acting and writing.

Based partially on the theme of reincarnation, “Down to Earth” takes its lead character, Lance Barton, played by Rock, to heaven and back again in a series of comedic parables.

Naturally, Rock, who co-wrote the script, had his own profound thoughts on the great unknown.

“I?d come back as Oprah [Winfrey?s] dog,” Rock said when asked who, or what, he would most like to be reincarnated as.

However, talk shows are not Rock?s favorite place to be. He said that he considers press promotion to be the toughest part of his job.

“It?s work, ya gotta do it,” said Rock, who had been doing non-stop promotion for his new film for two weeks.

Rock said that he liked the new film, and described it as a departure from his previous films, which include “Lethal Weapon 4” and “New Jack City.”

“It is a romantic comedy,” Rock said.

Because of the genre, “Down to Earth” keeps the profanity to a minimum, Rock said.

“No one has seen this side of me,” he added.

Rock said that there are similarities between himself and Lance Barton, the main character of the film who is a struggling comedian in New York. Both had the same aspirations during their formative years, according to Rock.

“When I started out, all I wanted was some laughs and a girl,” Rock said.

At this stage in his career, Rock is as busy as ever. He is set to begin work on another film project in two months and plans on writing more screenplays.

“I haven?t directed yet,” he said when asked about his goals in the near future. He intends to direct the next screenplay that he completes.

The interview did not conclude without Rock opining on current events, including the legal troubles of rap star Sean “Puffy” Combs and girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.”I think he should have to renounce his rights to Jennifer,” Rock said.
