Drugs, Porno Stars and Bad Cinema

“Before I was a drug addict, I had so many different problems,” says acoke-head and pill popper played by Adrian Grenier in the film Cecil B.Demented. “Now I only have one problem. Drugs has given me a real focus.”

Don’t you love it when movies do their job? It’s very disappointing when youfail to get what you paid for. Well over this past weekend my roommate rentedtwo movies from Blockbuster and one of them is a film I highly recommend.

The film is called Cecil B. Demented and it stars Melanie Griffith andStephen Dorff.

Cecil was written and directed by cult filmmaker Jonathan Waters. Waters isthe same guy that gave us “Hairspray” and “Cry Baby.” He’s also the guy thatmade Ricki Lake a star.

Cecil B. Demented is about a guy, (Stephen Dorff) who is the leader of ayoung group of cinema terrorists and a self-described “prophet againstprofit” in making motion pictures.

The plot of this movie is that Cecil and his alternative cronies kidnap amajor movie star named Honey Whitlock. Griffith plays Whitlock and gives herbest performance since her breakthrough hit, “Working Girl.”

Cecil and his band of cinema outlaws force Honey Whitlock to star in Cecil’smovie and all of Hollywood are aghast. At first Honey was very reluctant tostar in Cecil’s reality-based movie. But as the film goes on, she sees thepoint Cecil is trying to make and is enjoying that she is surpassing heractress status and becoming a legend.

Throughout the film, Cecil and his gang interrupts bad film-making i.e.former SNL Kevin Nealon playing Forrest Gump in a Gump sequel. Cecil alsodemands that everyone suffers and transports their energy into theirreality-based movie. This includes that no one can have sex until the film isfinished. His horny crew, which includes an ex-porn star, Cherish (AliciaWitt), has “taken a vow of celibacy for celluloid” until it’s a wrap.

The movie is filled with film industry insider jokes. Waters has so manyclever one-liners in this film that he keeps you laughing throughout.

“Power to the people and punish bad cinema!” screams director Cecil B.Demented in the beginning of the film.

Well, people should be punished if they choose to miss out on this fine pieceof cinema.
