Critically acclaimed female comedian, Margaret Cho, stars in her own one-woman concert film.

“I’m The One I Want,” is a stand-up concert film that opened Friday, Dec. 1 at the Crest Theater.

The film written by Cho herself was hilariously funny and honest about her experiences with Hollywood, television and her 1986 ABC sitcom All-American Girl.

The producer of the sitcom phoned Cho and said, “The network is concerned with the fullness of your face.”

Later, the network added that she was “not Asian enough” and hired her an Asian consultant who advised her to use chopsticks in public. They also told her to put the chopsticks in her hair.

Cho’s hysterically funny jokes about her suicide attempts and her many unnecessary ‘oral favors’ to gain acceptance in Hollywood made her experiences seem unrealistic.

“I just wanted people to like me, so I extended that courtesy. It was my version of the mint on the pillow,” she said.

The film is uncensored and unadulterated about sex, drugs and alcohol. She called herself a “fag hag” and claimed that the gay community wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for women like herself.

“I’m sure that there were people that were offended but the nature of comedy is in your face and I like to be outrageous,” Cho said.

“I’m normally a shy person and I get to bring out the other side of me out,” added Cho.

Cho’s hilarious jokes about her own mother, Asian Americans and her lesbian experiences proves why her film is considered one of the best selling films in its category and has sold out each time.

The film was shot during Cho’s stand-up performance at San Francisco’s Warfield Theater.

Cho filmed her stand-up show as a historical event for herself and because she loved the stand-up films made by Richard Pryor and decided to release it.

“I just wanted it to be out there for more people to see,” Cho said.

“I think that it’s a great movie on a lot of different levels, the importance of a person of color, as a women and as a minority in the entertainment industry and being all right with yourself,” Cho said.

Cho had always wanted to be a performer, but when she was growing up she felt invisible and that her dreams were limited. This was because there were no Asian American role models on television.

“I felt that by doing comedy I could be on stage and to me the stage was enough,” Cho said.

“I’m very happy right now. I’m still a performer, a writer and an actress,” Cho said.

Among the things she wants to be, the most important is that she is a stand-up comedian.

Cho is currently writing a new show plus an autobiography titled “I’m The One That I Want,” with major tours planned for both the new show and the book. Cho is also in the process of writing a film for release in 2002.

“I’m The One That I Want,” has received great reviews from critics. However, the most important thing to Cho is that she loved filming it and the fact that she loves the film itself.
