Brightman lights up Sacramento
December 5, 2000
Full-blown into the world tour of her latest album “La Luna,” classical crossover artist Sarah Brightman dazzled Sacramento as she performed a collection of her past and present hits.
The concert, which took place in Arco Arena, offered up an amazing array of lighting techniques and choreographed dance that flattered Brightman’s supreme vocal stylings.
Although known for her wide soprano range in operatic performances, Brightman successfully accomplished a blend of pop, Latin and techno flavored music into her 90- minute concert. Supported by a small, yet noteworthy orchestra, Brightman was joined on stage by a handful of expert dancers and backed by a complementing choir throughout the show.
One of the many high points in this concert occurred just after a short intermission, where the curtain surrounding the stage was pulled back, revealing a large rotating globe that spread light over two male dancers propelled by the waist above the stage. As the audience watched the dancers twist and turn in mid-air, Brightman then entered, also propelled, and carried out a beautiful rendition of “Deliver Me.”
The undoubted crowd-pleaser of the evening was Brightman’s performance of “A Lighter Shade of Pale.” The song was introduced by a surprise blast of fireworks and carried out with as much passion as the double encore that was demanded by the crowd after she ended with her signature rendition of “The Music of the Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Over all, Brightman’s combination of masterfully articulated songs (with even some in Italian), beautifully choreographed dance, stage effects and gorgeous costumes all contributed to her splendid array of talent that delighted each and every one of the spectators that stood cheering her performance in a deserved standing ovation.
