The perfect night life at Mandango’s
November 15, 2000
Mandango’s Bar and Grill, a popular sports bar for college students and area locals, is located on the corner of Fulton and Hurley and is the perfect nightspot for college guys.
Living up to the reputation as a ‘testosterone-fest,’ Mandango’s has 13 televisons, including a big screen, all turned to sports channels, three pool tables, 16 beers on tap, and appetizers including buffalo wings, potato skins, and pizza.
The beer selection ranges from domestic beers, such as Budweiser and Coors Light, to imported beers, including Guinness and Bass Ale.
My single female friends opt to frequent this bar due to the abundance of the male species. After my experience, I can clearly see why.
The male to female ratio was about 3 to 1. However, unlike many college bars, the guys seemed to be preoccupied more with playing pool and conversing with their buddies rather than checking out every other barely-21 female that walks by. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the environment is like a church potluck, it’s just not as big of a meet market as many of the other popular nightspots in the area can be.
The bar was crowded with college co-eds at 11 p.m. The jukebox blared Top 40 music, provoking drunken guys to sing along with “Cowboy” by Kid Rock.
The majority of the guys were playing pool and darts while youthful girls sat on the sidelines, twirling their freshly highlighted hair and sipping on bottles of Coors Light.
There were two men, Joe and Jose, tending bar, limiting the waiting time for a drink to two minutes or less. While I found the bartenders relatively friendly, I have heard numerous times that the night bartenders particularly favor the male patrons, leaving the females waiting for their drinks.
And those drinks are popular. Drink specials run from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m., featuring well drinks and domestic beers for $1.99 and microbrews for $2.75.
Due to those drink specials and the inability to keep track of my keys, I had to visit Mandango’s once again the following afternoon. I figured that as long as I was there, I might as well try one of their infamous burgers, as an attempt to remedy a hangover. I was pleasantly surprised with the food and service, as were my friends who were accompanying me.
The Saturday day bartender, Liz, provided service with a smile to the significantly older lunch crowd.
Overall, my experience at Mandango’s was a good one. A fun, clean atmosphere, relatively cheap beers and a college-age crowd make Mandango’s a prime spot to spend your money.
