This fall “The Wonderful World of Disney” will present “The Miracle Worker,” the timeless story of triumph born from tragedy, the story of Helen Keller.

Eight-year-old Hallie Kate Eisenberg (Pepsi commercials and “Bicentennial Man”) plays Helen who has been blind, deaf and mute since she was 18 months old. Her most consistent form of communication is to grab, tear and scratch violently at anything or anyone handy.

The Keller family hires Annie Sullivan, played by Alison Elliott (“The Spitfire Grill”), a recent graduate from the Perkins School for the Blind, as a live-in teacher to try to teach Helen to communicate.

Through a disciplined process, Annie teaches Helen manners and how to finger spell, sign language done on the bottom of her hand. Helen expresses her frustrations of the learning process violently, but through determination, Annie eventually helps Helen to be a civilized, legendary leader for the disabled.

Nadia Tass?s “The Miracle Worker” is based on the Tony Award winning play of the same title and will air Sunday, Nov. 12 on the ABC Television Network.
