At the Movies – Once again, George Lucas strikes gold as “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” clears box-office hurdles and reels in over $290 million, bringing it to number 11 on the all-time list of film grosses to date.
In Music – Creating a surge in synthesized music, Devo tops the charts with their cult-classic “Whip It.”
On the Tube – “Saturday Night Live” announces its cast members for the fifth season, which include Joe Piscopo and Gilbert Gottfried.
In Sports – The Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series for the first time in the franchise’s history. Lead by Most Valuable Player, Mike Schmidt, who singled in two runs during the third inning, the Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals in game six.
In the News – During a televised national debate, President Jimmy Carter repeatedly refers to Republican candidate Ronald Reagan as “dangerous.” Reagan, in turn, focuses on the President’s economic record and defense issues.
In a Phoenix business office, a package bomb with a “trick or treat” sticker explodes into a shower of nails and tacks in the faces of employees, injuring nine.
Kentucky Governor John Brown, Jr. gives the state’s highest honor, the Governor’s Distinguished Service Medallion, to 90-year-old Col. Harland Sanders (yes, that Col. Sanders).
Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin ” Buzz”Aldrin, Jr. sues the publisher and authors of “The Roswell Incident” for libel.
The book claims Aldrin sighted extraterrestrial spacecraft and reported it to Mission Control shortly before the 1969 landing on the moon. Aldrin claims the information could lead people to believe he is ” bizarre, perverse, unreliable, unfit, eccentric, ludicrous, unscientific and wayward.”
Happy Birthday – Chad Smith, the drummer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, turns 38 today.
No Kidding – “Bambi” gets revenge! In Cockeysville, Maryland, an aggressive buck smashes into a store advertising hunting licenses. The deer destroyed the front window and rampaged the place, then left through the same shattered glass opening it created. Email comments to [email protected]
