Microphone Check- Barenaked Ladies/Reprise Records

Andrea McKurtis

The Bar-enaked Ladies? newest release “Maroon,” reminds me of a time when I was a small child. I was innocently nestled on my couch at home listening to Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane records, oblivious to the actual deep intent of the often drug-induced lyrics.

The Barenaked Ladies give way to that innocent feeling through their ability to mask emotion with whimsical melodies and profound “what did they say?” lyrics. They have a way of making it easy to forget your troubles for a little while.

In “Maroon,” the Ladies throw in a little bit of everything, from some get-happy tunes to songs reminiscent of the Beatles in “Go Home” and “Too Little Too Late.”

The song “Conventioneers” is a sexy but cheesy lounge-type tune about the politics of a passionate fling, and a little bit of Roy Orbison shines through in the song “Sell Sell Sell.”

As always can be expected of the Ladies, the lyrics become more enjoyable with repeat listening as you identify with the silly words.

Their trademark rhymes are evident in most of the tracks, including”Go Home” when Steven Page sings, ?If you?re flummoxed and flushed and your heartbeat is rushed then get out of the slush, tell your dog team to mush.?

“Maroon” is a refreshing follow-up to their last album, Stunt, and a worthwhile purchase for the child at heart.
