Women’s soccer takes two
September 26, 2000
With two wins on the road over the weekend, the women?s soccer team is back on track.
Following last week?s first losses of the campaign to Northern Arizona and Arizona State, the Hornets bounced back in New York, with two shut-outs at Fordham and Stony Brook.
Sunday?s offensive performance against Stony Brook was one of the best of the season as goals from Krissy Collyer, Naomi Ennis and Lisa Wrightsman resulted in a 3-0 victory.
The Hornets took the lead after 32 minutes when Lori Kerswell drew a Sea Wolves defender to her before passing to Collyer who lifted the ball over the goalkeeper Renee Pelletier.
Kerswell was also involved in the second goal minutes later. She flicked on a cross by Summer Douglas and Ennis was on hand to knock the ball into theopen net to give the Hornets a 2-0 half-time lead.
Stony Brook, who have now lost six of their last seven games, had more of the play in the second half but sub goalie Tiffany Genovese was ready for anything they came up with.
It was Wrightsman who had the final word when she ran onto a through-ball from Desirae Ferae and calmly beat the Stony Brook goalkeeper.
Friday?s game at Fordham was another excellent defensive display and a single goal by freshman Jennifer Spudic was enough for the win. Spudic ran onto a pass by Summer Douglas in the second half before slotting the ball past the Ram?s goalie.
Good work from the Hornet backline meant that keeper Amy Seely had little to do during the game as Fordham?s scoring opportunities were severely limited.
“They had some dangerous players but we kept on top of them throughout the game,” Sac State head coach Sandra Asimos said.
The team took a day off in New York City on Saturday before returning to the field on Sunday to register the win over Stony Brook.
“I am very happy with this week?s work,” said Asimos. “We have had two shutouts and two wins on the road. We are doing very well on the road.”
The Hornets are now 6-2-2 and will try to improve that record when they face UC Santa Barbara at Hornet Field on Sunday at 2pm.
