State Hornet Staff

For those of you that were not aware that Sac State had a water ski team, it may come as more of a surprise that they are quite successful.

On Saturday, they will be headed to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Western Conference Water Ski Association Regional. The two-day event will consist of four events for both men and women, which are slalom, trick, wake-boarding, and jump.

Sac State will pin their hopes on skiers Brian Esslinger, Greg Fisher, Nick Phillips, and Matt Brown for the men?s competition, while Shea Heieck, Kara Bush, Rachel Bristow, and Bridget Kennelly will ski for the women.

During the Regional warm up at Koppert Lake, Washington on Sept. 23 and 24 Sac State made a killing placing multiple skiers on both the men and women sides.

Esslinger took first in the trick event while Matt Brown placed sixth for the men. Leading the women were Kennelly who placed first and third place finisher Jessica Lang. Greg Fisher and Nick Phillips placed third and fourth respectively in the slalom while Heieck, Bush, Bristow, and Kennelly swept the top four spots in the women?s event. Katy Nicholls and Lindsey Read took the second and sixth place spots in the women?s jump.

After the regional tournament, the team will head to the National Championships in Lafayette, LA. It will be hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and begin on October 12.

Anybody interested in joining the water ski team can contact head coach Brian Dulgar in the aquatics center. Members can also elect to receive one unit of P.E. credit.
