Vandals damage Greek booths in Library Quad

Vandals defaced untended student organization booths in the Library Quad Sept. 14.

During Recruitment Week many sororities and fraternities leave out their booths because it is difficult to take the booths down at the end of the day, according to Heather Dunn-Carlton, program advisor.

She explained that most fraternities and sororities camp out in the library quad during this week in an effort to keep their booths from being vandalized.

Although it is possible other fraternities and sororities could be the culprits, Dunn-Carlton said that it is unlikely. “The Greek system is so involved in their own recruitment that they would not have time to vandalize others? booths,” Dunn-Carlton said.

“This has been the worst vandalism and many organizations have been hit,” said Brad Sheerwood, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The fraternity has not only had its booth vandalized, it has been getting threatening phone calls.

“This hurts the Greek system?s reputation,” Sheerwood said.

Campus police are currently looking into the incidents. “We do not have any solid leads except that two males in dark clothing are described as suspects in one of the reports,” said John Hamrick, director of Public Safety.

The Greek societies have been instructed to file a police report anytime vandalism occurs.

“We have asked our patrol officers to give special attention to the Library Quad in their bicycle, foot, and vehicle patrols. We are also asking for the public?s help in reporting anything suspicious immediately at 278- 6851,” Hamrick said.

“Our fraternity has taken a stance that we are not going to worry about vandalism, but Greek unity needs to come together,” said Shaun Lumachi, president of Sigma Chi.
