New digital media major now offered
September 5, 2000
The Communication Studies Department is offering a new major that will focus on the new methods of communication that are becoming ever more prevalent in the 21st century, including both the audio and video aspects of multimedia.
The program was created by Ray Koegel, communications professor, who has a background in multimedia stemming from its earliest days. The new major is the result of over a year of teamwork within the Communication Studies Department in an effort to create the new curriculum needed for such progressive technology.
The digital media concentration offers a variety of courses that vary from graphic design to computer science. However, according to Val Smith, chair of the department of communication studies, the program is designed to create a well-rounded knowledge of digital media, ultimately giving the student the ability to adapt to an ever-changing technological environment. Also, unlike other computer-related fields, digital media emphasizes technology as a tool for communication.
While interest in technology is important, Koegel insists that vast knowledge in computers is not necessary. What one needs most is “vision and creativity,” Koegel said. The program is ultimately designed to create the future leaders of an industry, Smith said. Only an interest and aptitude for technology are needed.
And the industry is indeed burgeoning, according to Smith. Career opportunities include, but are not limited to, corporate training, online education, television, online journalism and web design. Most of these fields have countless job opportunities and are very well paying.
The response to the program has been overwhelming. Smith expects the concentration to become impacted within two semesters. Those interested should contact Ray Koegel at [email protected].
