El Grito: a Pre-Mexican Independence Day celebration fills the University Union

DJ LG and Banda Uriense join Sac State for El Grito!

Sac State UNiQUE and the Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity hosted the annual El Grito Mexican Independence Day pre-celebration Thursday, Sep. 14, 2023. 

Students from all backgrounds were invited to the University Ballroom to embrace Mexican culture through song and dance. 

Attendees said events like these help students embrace and celebrate their Mexican heritage. Viva Mexico!

(she/her) Angelica Brito is a third-year student from Los Angeles majoring in journalism with a minor in communications and marketing at Sac State. This is her second semester working for the Spanish section at The State Hornet. She hopes to pursue a career in Spanish-speaking journalism.

(he/him) Jonathan Santiago is in his second semester at The State Hornet. He is very excited to work for The State Hornet again. He is an Economics major and hopes to work as a financial analyst.

(she/her) Desiree McFarland is in her last semester at Sacramento State University. Holding a bachelor's in communication studies from CSU Sacramento, Spring 2023, she joined the Hornet after declaring a minor in journalism in Fall 2023. McFarland has also worked for an outside journalism non-profit organization that helps the black community thrive in the field of media. McFarland's uses her experience as a public speaker, multi-media reporter and podcast DJ on "916 to Life," to show her passion and enthusiasm for journalism as an art form.
Cristian Gonzalez

Cristian Gonzalez is the multimedia editor for The State Hornet. He is a political science and journalism major and has collected AAs in hospitality management, math, and physical sciences on his way to Sac State. He is interested in incorporating his love for local music, art and food into his work.
