Associated Students, Inc. held its fourth candidate forum on Monday, April 11 with two candidates presenting their ideas without their opponents present.

Anthony Maalouf, candidate for vice president of university affairs, and Abraham Mendoza III, candidate for vice president of academic affairs, were the only two candidates present at Monday’s candidate forum.

The room was filled mainly with other candidates and students donning the purple T-shirts of team AMPLIFY, the team the two candidates who attended the forum are a part of.

Mendoza talked about his struggle to transition into college and how he later succeeded with the help of campus resources and organizations. He said that this experience has prepared him for his involvement on campus.

“I want to take that and bring it to the position and advocate for students just like myself,” Mendoza said.

One of the responsibilities of the vice president of university affairs is to recruit students to join committees on campus. Maalouf said he plans to engage with students to find passionate students to fill the committees.

“Just continuing that dialogue,” Maalouf said. “It’s not the vice president of university affairs’ role to sit and wait for students to come to them. It’s my job to go out and continue the dialogue with students.”

Brittney Leblue, educational technology graduate student and a supporter of team AMPLIFY, said she would have liked to have heard from the opposing candidates also.

“I want the best candidate for the position,” Leblue said. “It would’ve been nice to have a well-rounded perspective, but what they had to say, what they want to do is very powerful, so I support them.”

Nick Chiappe, vice president of university affairs candidate, and Elsi Venegas, vice president of academic affairs candidate, were not in attendance due to conflicting class schedules, according to ASI elections officer Kyle Maples.
