Associated Students, Inc. concluded its candidate forum series with the sole presidential candidate on Monday, April 18, one day before voting opens.

Patrick Dorsey, who is the current Director of Governmental Affairs, is running uncontested in this election for the presidential seat.

The last ASI election in which a presidential candidate ran uncontested was in 2014, according to Lisa Dalton, ASI board associate.

At the forum, Dorsey identified the biggest issue Sacramento State students are facing as the lack of engagement and told how he planned to address the issue.

“I think lack of engagement is not [the students’] fault. Lack of engagement is a symptom of feeling their voices aren’t being heard,” Dorsey said. “When students are not feeling their stories are being told, and they’re not in an environment they can share those stories, that’s when they become disengaged. For myself, to tackle that is to be an active listener. It’s to be a leader and set that tone. I want to be an active listener, but I also want to hold the next ASI board of directors accountable to that.”

Dorsey said while campaigning this election, the greatest pleasure has been speaking to clubs and organizations about issues that matter to them, and he plans on continuing that engagement while in office.

“What’s most important is when we have a dialogue, and I listen,” Dorsey said. “You can tell me what those issues are, and we can make a genuine difference.”

Voters will have the option to vote for Dorsey or vote of no confidence, if they see Dorsey unfit for the position, according to Elections Officer Kyle Maples.

Students can vote for candidates online at ASI’s website, http://www.asi.csus.edu/, or on campus from April 19-21.
