ASI Recess aims to relieve stress

As finals week draw near, Sacramento State’s Associated Students, Inc. held ASI Recess in the library quad on Wednesday, Dec. 9 to help students relieve their stress.
At the event, ASI gave away hot cocoa, coffee mugs that could be decorated by students and finals supplies such as scantrons, blue books, pencils and snacks.
“[This event] is to provide some relief to the students this week,” said Patrick Dorsey, ASI director of governmental affairs. “We are doing something fun, decorating mugs as well as getting them exposed to our board ASI.”
ASI Director of Undeclared Students, Mia Kagianas, was at the event decorating a coffee mug with students and talking to them about what ASI does.
“We are all needing coffee and scantrons and making last minute trips to the bookstore and the student store,” said biology major Stavroula Prokopus. “Having this out, especially free, is just another way it can help us study for finals.”
The ASI advocates for their students through committees and at the state capital, Dorsey said.
Students are encouraged to study and take advantage of forming a study group. Dorsey recommends taking classes with the same people throughout your college career.
“When you [take classes with the same people], you have that support network that can push you and inspire you to do better,” Dorsey said.
According to a 2008 University of Illinois study, small breaks can increase students focus for longer periods of time.
“I was passing by [the event], and it looked really fun,” said undeclared student Lisa Rodriguez. “Free hot cocoa, activities and study packs are good.”
