Food Pantry fills up at Sac State

Associated Students, Inc. held a donation drive called Fill up the Food Pantry from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 in the University Union lobby at Sacramento State.

Donation drives for the Food Pantry will take place twice a semester said Madison Hall, the ASI community service events coordinator.

The Food Pantry’s grand opening ceremony took place on Tuesday, Sept 15 in the lobby of the North Wing of Yosemite Hall.

Albert Delgado, coordinator of ASI’s Safe Rides, said that after the Fill up the Food Pantry event is over, students can still donate to the food pantry at any time at the ASI Hot Spot on the first floor of the University Union, or at the Food Pantry itself during operating hours.

The Food Pantry is located in room 163 of Yosemite Hall.

Each college within Sac State was asked to donate a different type of item, such as canned fruit, dry goods, or shower supplies. Donation boxes were separated by college to see which discipline donated the most. The friendly competition was intended to get an even selection of goods for the Food Pantry, instead of just all canned goods, Hall said.

As another incentive to donate, Sac State’s Student Organizations & Leadership is allowing students to sign in after making a donation to earn credit towards a certificate that is part of the Leadership Initiative program.

According to the Student Organizations & Leadership website, participants were required to bring three or more specified items in order to earn a service credit towards their certificate.

The Food Pantry donation table will also be set up at each ASI event this week, Delgado said.

A list of upcoming events can be found on the ASI webpage.

ASI has been accepting donations for the Food Pantry since August, but this was the first time they had directly reached out to students for donations.

“We’ve been really lucky,” Hall said. “We got a good amount of stuff.”
