Sande cards 68 at Cowgirl Classic, Sac State women’s golf finishes 13th overall

Sacramento State women’s golf wrapped up their last tournament before competing in the Big Sky Conference Championship on April 19 in Chandler, Arizona. The Hornets finished 13th out of 20 teams with junior Rockelle Sande leading the team today at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.

Sande finished in ninth place and tied a Sac State school record, shooting a 4-under-par round in the third round of the Cowgirl Classic. Sande carded two tough first rounds on Monday and was tied for 53rd place coming into the final round.

During the first round, the junior opened on the 15th hole with a birdie, two double bogeys and a par. The second round she was 3-over through her first 11 holes. Sande had birdies on the par-4 eighth and 10th dropped her to 1-over before a bogey on the par-4 12th hole.

Sande ended up shooting 79-74-68-221 for the tournament. Last year at the same tournament she had her previous collegiate best, carding a 71. She is currently tied for the ninth-lowest in the Hornet record book for the women’s individual 54-hole with her score of 221.

The team shot 294, 6-over-par in the third round to tie for the second-best team score of the day in the Cowgirl Classic and the third-best in Sac State school history.

Senior Sagee Palavivatana led the team Monday in both rounds. She finished the first round shooting a 77 and followed up with a 74 in the second round. The senior parred six of her first seven holes today, but was 4-over following a triple bogey on her third hole. She shot a 74 in her final round, completing the tournament with a total of 225.

Palavivatana finished the tournament tied for 22nd place.

Both freshman, Astha Madan and Katie Dunaway shot a 77 today. Madan tied for 71st place in the tournament, shooting rounds of 80-79-77-236. In her final round today, which was her best round of the tournament, she recorded two birdies, five pars and a double bogey.

Dunaway also had her best round today and completed the tournament with rounds of 80-79-77-236. She ended up tying for 97th place. She parred her first eight holes before collecting a double bogey. In her final nine holes she tallied six pars and three bogeys.

Sophomore Chloe Bartek finished in 81st place. She played her final six holes at 1-under-par with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. Her best round was today with a 75 and totaled 239 to conclude her tournament action.

Ten of the 12 Big Sky teams competed in the Cowgirl Classic with the University of Idaho Vandals leading the conference in the tournament, combining for a team total of 914. Sac State finished in fourth place out of the ten Big Sky teams, just six strokes behind Idaho.
