The Hornets suffered the same setback today that occurred last weekend after they defeated a ranked team. The Sacramento State women’s tennis team (6-7) dropped their match 1-6 to No. 62 Fresno State this evening after dominating nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara on Saturday 6-1.

After the women won against Long Beach State on Feb. 27 they lost to their next ranked opponent on March 1. The same result happened in their performance against the Bulldogs.

Anna-Maria Nau was removed from the singles lineup due to being sick. She was able to play against her Gauchos opponent and took the only loss for the Hornets in that match. Deimante Bulatovaite and Olivia Boija moved up positions to No. 2 and 3 respectively to accommodate her absence.

Bulatovaite was one of only two Sac State players to force a third set after her neck-and-neck performance against Maiar Sherif Ahmed, but was downed 2-6, 7-5, 6-10. Boija succumbed to Rana Sherif Ahmed 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bulldogs their 10th win of the season after they went up 4-0.

Ana Loaiza Esquivias was the lone Sac State player to secure a victory over Fresno State in singles action. The freshman outlasted the Bulldogs’ Anneka Watts 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 10-6 in position No. 3.

The rest of the team were retired in quick fashion. Sophomore Andie Mouzes made her first appearance this season and was overpowered by Tanya Murtagh 6-0, 6-1.

In the beginning of the match, the Bulldogs were able to quickly jump out ahead as they claimed the doubles point after Boija and Tori Trylovich lost their set 8-3 to Anneka Watts and Sophie Watts. This gave Fresno State the 1-0 lead.

After facing their fourth consecutive ranked opponent, the squad will return to Big Sky Conference play at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club on at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Southern Utah University.

The Hornets boast a 3-0 conference record this season.
