Men’s tennis drops its match against UT Arlington

Men’s tennis played a more competitive match today against University of Texas at Arlington, but were not able to come away with the win as the men lost 5-2.

Juniors Sean Kolar and Joaquin Marquez won their singles matches today to score the two match points for the Hornets.

For Marquez, this match was his season debut and he made the most of it by going 2-0. He won his singles match 7-6, 1-6, 10-8 and also won his doubles set with senior Tom Miller, 6-4.

Sacramento State’s No. 1 singles player Kolar beat Sebastian Erimicioiu 6-1, 7-5 in straight sets and Kolar is now 4-4 on the season in his individual matches.

The Big Sky Player of the Week, senior Roy Brandys, lost in straight sets to Johnathan Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-1. Brandys is now 2-5 on the season in singles matches.

Freshman Kasparas Zemaitelis and sophomore Aymen Abdulwahab were not able to get much going in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions for the Hornets. They lost their matches 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively.

Although they lost the doubles point, the matches fared much better than they did yesterday againt SMU, where the Hornets struggled to win games. Sac State’s No.1 doubles pairing, Kolar and Brandys, lost their set 6-3 and was the most lopsided doubles score of the day.

Miller and Marquez beat Mario Muniesa Daniel Armengol and Daniel Armengol in their set 6-4 as the No. 2 doubles pairing. Marquez was the fourth doubles partner for Miller who has competed in every doubles match this season. He is 4-4 on the season in his doubles matches.

Zemaitelis and freshman Christopher Clayton pushed their set to the breaking point but ended up losing 7-5.

The Hornets are now 3-6 this season as they head back home to Rio Del Oro Racquet Club tomorrow to face Southern Utah University at 2 p.m.
