The Redwood Room in the University Union was awakened Feb. 18 with enthusiasm, accompanied by an indie rock sound complimented by rough but appealingly smooth vocals from the lead singer and guitarist of Humble Wolf, Jayson Angrove.

UNIQUE welcomed Humble Wolf to play a nooner for Sacramento State, and bassist David Albertson kept up the comical energy throughout the show, jumping off stage to grab a bag of complementary popcorn to help get his band members, Angrove and drummer Jesse Sherwood, a snack while they continued the beat.

“The performance was really good which made them better, instead of them just standing around,” said Sac State student Justin Puckett.

Alberston graduated from Sac State in 2012 with a music business degree, and currently, along with Angrove and backing vocal and lead guitarist Chris Winger, teaches music lessons.

Humble Wolf formed in 2010, and have two albums out. Their recent album “Black and White” was released in January 2015 and “Paper Thin” was released in July 2013.

“A lot of our songs sound different from each other, some of them are super mellow, and some of them are loud, very aggressive,” said Angrove. “[…] Most people’s attentions spans are so short, they don’t want to hear the same goddamn thing over and over again.”

All of their songs are original compositions and Angrove is proud of where they are and where the band is going, having many future goals ahead of them. Humble Wolf is looking forward to recording more and making their way up to northern California and hopefully Washington.

“We look forward to national touring, international touring, interstellar touring, making a living as an artist and musician,” said Albertson.

Humble Wolf’s distinctive sound attracts and hypnotizes the audience, engraving their songs into fan’s memories.

“I really liked it; it was great,” said Sac State student Lexie Martinez. “I heard about them a week ago and I loved the song ‘Chasing Plains,’ and I had to come see them.”

Not only does the sound of Humble Wolf make it easy for students to become fans, but they create a lively and animated show, being completely immersed in the upbeat vibes they create on stage. All being from Roseville and knowing each other from high school, the tight bond shared between the band members reflects strongly and positively on their music and show.

Humble Wolf has played at the Ace of Spades, Pour House and Concert in the Park in Sacramento. They currently play a monthly show at The Shady Lady Saloon on R street in midtown. They have an upcoming show in Rocklin, Sacramento on Feb. 20 for Winger’s birthday and will start to make their way up northern California, hitting Truckee on March 21.

“I’m really happy that Sac State sponsors live music in the Union and that UNIQUE brings in local bands to play, I’d like to thank my teachers at Sac State for the musical training,” said Albertson.
