The women’s golf team received ninth place by one stroke over three teams who tied for 10th after a strong round three at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii.

The team shot a 307-317-307–931 for the tournament. A rough round two score of 317 hurt the Hornet’s chances of placing higher in the tournament.

Freshmen Katie Dunaway and Astha Madan led the Hornets as the top scorers. Madan shot a 76-79-72–229 and tied for 22nd while Dunaway shot 75-80-77–232 for the tournament and tied for 34th place.

Outside of the Cowgirl Desert tournament, Dunaway has either been first or second in scoring to lead the Hornets.

Madan is no typical freshman, she came into the Hornets lineup as an internationally experienced player. Originally from Gurgoan, India, she was selected to represent India at the Junior World Championships in 2013 and recently this year she represented India at the Asian Games.

Sophomore Chloe Bartek rebounded from a rough previous tournament and tied with Dunaway with a score of 232. She was consistent through the tournament by posting scores of 6-over par for round one, and 5-over par for round two and three.

Senior Sagee Palavivatana and junior Rockelle Sande struggled at Rainbow Wahine. Palavivatana, the team’s No. 1 seed, was not able to build off her strong last tournament and struggled in the third round. She shot a 78-81-84–243 for the tournament and tied for 63rd.

Sande could not recover from a rough day, one where she was a combined 21-over par in the first two rounds. She shot a 81-85-79–245 for the tournament and tied for 67th.

Nicolette Bondura and Lexie Hall were the final two players to compete for the Hornets as individuals. Hall shot a 79-80-80–239 for the tournament and tied for 57th place while Bondura shot a 79-87-84–251 for the tournament and tied for 73rd place.

The Hornets will continue their season in Februray at the Matador Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif.
