Nevada sweeps Sac State volleyball 3-0

Nevada seemed to be running on all cylinders Tuesday night as the Wolf Pack defeated the Hornets 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) in their home opener.

From the very beginning the Wolf Pack seemed to have control over the game, playing extremely confident volleyball as they led the first set 6-0.

The young Sacramento State team, with no remaining seniors on the roster, seemed to be making mistakes that only experience can repair. The women only accumulated 2.0 team blocks against Nevada’s 7.0 team blocks.

Despite this difference, the Hornet squad never backed down in their attempts to keep this game in striking distance even when down by large margins in the second and third set.

Even though the Hornets were shutout 0-3, juniors Lauren Aikels and Sloan Lovett both remained competitive. Aikels lead the team with 10 kills accompanied by a .304 average and Lovett recorded 12 kills with a .156 average.

The scoreboard did reflect the women’s efforts. Sophomore Lexie Skalbeck had 11 digs and eight assists, sophomore Madeline Cannon had five kills, 8 assists and 3 digs and freshman Kennedy Kurtz had 8 assists with 3 digs.

Sophomore Morgan Stanley, the team’s leader in sets per kill, did not suit up with the team this game. Stanley is major contributor to this Hornet team and has started in every game this season. She was out of the lineup with an undisclosed injury.

During every set Sac State made, it seemed as if they could mount a comeback at any moment with a .433 average attack in the first set and a .588 average throughout the second set.

The women’s work was cut out for them going up against Nevada’s 6-foot-3 middle blocker Tessa Lea’ea.

The Wolf Pack’s Lea’ea racked up 14 kills and three blocks. Madison Foley had six kills, seven assists and 10 digs, helping the team to an overwhelming victory over the Hornets.

Sac State will be playing again this weekend in a matchup against San Jose State in the two-day Cal Poly ShareSLO Tournament Sept. 12-13.
