Sacramento State softball took the lead after six innings only to see it slip away from its grasp against Idaho State on Saturday in Pocatello, Idaho. The Bengals were leading 1-0 until the sixth, when Hornets redshirt freshman third baseman Alexis Martinez came up to bat with a runner on first base and two outs.

Martinez blasted her second home run of the season over the right-center field fence to give Sac State the 2-1 lead. She finished the day 1-for-3, a home run, two RBIs and scored a run. It was Martinez’s second home run of the series.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, the Bengals would answer back with a two-run home run of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a nine pitch walk to shortstop Hailey Breakwall, Sac State junior pitcher Caitlin Brooks gave up a one pitch home run to designated player Terah Blackwell.

The home run gave the Bengals the lead back and the eventual win.

Brooks had a perfect game going until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Bengals hit its first two hits and scored the first run of the game.

In her five starts against Idaho State, Brooks is 2-2 with a no decision. She allowed three runs on six hits, two walks and struck out five batters.

The Hornets did have a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Junior center fielder Alexa Chattleton hit a fly ball to the gap in left-center, but Bengals left fielder Kacie Burnett made an over-the-shoulder catch to rob Chattleton of a double and a run scored.

With the loss, Sac State’s record on the season falls to 19-18, 7-4, while Idaho State holds the season tiebreaker and improves its record to 24-16 and 6-3 in conference play.

Sac State will have its senior weekend on April 18-19 against Portland State Vikings. The Hornets will hold a ceremony for their three seniors, infielder Yesenia Alcala, catcher Paris Prado and pitcher Taylor Stroud, as they will play their final games at Shea Stadium. First pitch is at noon on Friday and Saturday.
