April 15, 2014
Sacramento State’s baseball team came away with a dominant victory in the Causeway Cup game against rival UC Davis in Davis, Calif., Tuesday.
Behind a seven-run fourth inning, the Hornets handled the Aggies (16-17, 3-6) for a decisive 15-7 win.
It was the 69th matchup between the two squads, and after Tuesday’s win, Sac State owns a 38-31 record over Davis.
Five different Sac State players had two or more RBIs, with senior third baseman Will Soto leading the way with four. Soto hit a two-run home run in the top of the 9th.
Hornets’ junior outfielder Kyle Moses went 4-5 and drove in two runs, while junior first baseman Rhys Hoskins hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Julian Barron (1-1) won his first collegiate game, as he went three innings, giving up one walk and three hits.
Davis pitchers struggled to handle the Hornets’ hitters, as all six pitchers sent to the mound gave up at least one earned run. Aggies starter Max Cordy surrendered four earned runs and walked four.
With the win, Sac State (22-14, 10-2) finished its five-game road trip with a 2-3 record, and will return home on Thursday when it kicks off a three-game set with Utah Valley.
First pitch will be at 3 p.m. at John Smith Field.
