In a situation where the Hornets needed to come up big to forget about their disappointing record, the women’s tennis team opened Big Sky Conference action with two shutouts at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club, Saturday.

Sacramento State won both matches 7-0.

On Saturday, Sac State women’s tennis swept Southern Utah (3-5) through doubles to claim the first point of the matchup. In singles the women swept their opponents, winning each match in only two sets.

The Thunderbirds Veronika Rogova managed to force a tiebreaker against the Hornets Daria Savchenko at singles match No. 2, but the sophomore came out victorious at 7-6 and retired her in the second set at 6-1.

Later in the afternoon, Sac State faced Weber State where the women had a sluggish start in the doubles matches. They came out with the doubles point, but allowed Weber State to challenge them before earning the sweep.

Hornets duo, senior Katharina Knoebl and freshman Alina Soltanici, stayed perfect in both of their doubles matches on Saturday winning 8-0.

No. 1 player Jennifer Nguyen did show frustration in her singles match against Weber’s Agata Bachanek. She claimed the first set at 6-2, but fell behind in the second set before recapturing the lead and winning 6-3.

The Hornets are looking to extend their 107-game winning streak against Big Sky foes on Sunday against Idaho State at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
