Sacramento State softball split Tuesday’s doubleheader against Princeton University at Shea Stadium. Hornets sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Yerby earned her first career shutout in the second game victory.

The Hornets lost the first game 3-1 before winning game two, 4-0.

Yerby was solid Tuesday in game two, pitching a complete game as she allowed zero runs on six hits and striking out two Tiger batters.

Yerby credits her teammates for helping earn her first career complete game shutout as a Hornet.

“I give it all to my defense,” Yerby said. “If it was not for them the shutout would not be possible.”

Sac State jumped to an early lead in the second inning, by scoring all four of its runs with two outs. The Hornets had three singles and a two-RBI double by junior Paige Martin.

In the first game, Sac State’s seventh inning rally came up short with the bases loaded, scoring one but unable to extend the game.

Sac State loaded the bases on a single and two walks but only scored one run. The run scored when sophomore first baseman Sasha Margulies drew a six-pitch walk with two outs, but Alcala would end the game on a ground out to third base.

Before the fifth inning, Sac State’s sophomore pitcher Jennifer Hartman had to work out of three jams each in the second, third and fourth innings.

In the fifth inning, the Tigers scored two runs from an error by senior shortstop Yesenia Alcala. The Tigers added another run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by Emily Viggers.

The Hornets struggled to score runs in game one leaving 10 runners on base, and leaving the bases loaded twice in the fourth and seventh innings.

Head coach Lori Perez said her team is nowhere close to where it needs to be.

“We have a lot of work to do still, and we will continue to adjust the lineups this weekend to find the best fit going forward,” Perez said.

With Tuesday’s split, the Hornets’ record improves 11-14. Sac State will open up Big Sky Conference against the University of North Dakota on Friday noon at home. Friday will be breast cancer awareness day at Shea Stadium.
