Del Grande hits walk-off single against Fresno State

Hornets’ center fielder David Del Grande hit an extra inning walk-off single against No.24 Fresno State capturing their second win against a ranked team this season, Wednesday at Raley Field.

The Sacramento State senior outfielder came up to bat in the bottom of the 10th with junior shortstop Scotty Burcham on third base and freshman Gunner Pollman on first. Del Grande hit a 2-2 fastball that landed in shallow center-field driving in the winning run. The Hornets won the game 2-1.

This is the second late-inning go-ahead run for the Hornets at Raley Field this season. They beat University of Nevada, Reno on Feb. 25 with the help of a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning by freshman second baseman Brandon Hunley.

Along with clutch hitting, Sac State had a solid game on the mound. Freshman starting pitcher Sam Long took the no-decision holding the Bulldogs scoreless over six innings. Long earned his first win as a Hornet at Fresno State back on Feb. 19.

The game was tied at zero until Fresno State scored its lone run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth off of junior pitcher Alex Palsha. The Bulldogs managed to get nine hits but left six runners on base. They ended the fifth, sixth and seventh innings hitting into double plays.

Sac State tied it at one in the bottom of the eigth after sophomore right fielder Nathan Lukes hit a 2-out ground ball to third reaching on an error and driving in junior Kyle Moses. The Hornets had a clean-sheet in the field going errorless for only the sixth time this season.

Sophomore closer Sutter McLoughlin earned the win throwing a scoreless tenth. It was McLoughlin’s second victory of the season.

The Hornets are now 7-6 on the season and have won both games played at Raley Field. Sac State will hit the road taking on UC Riverside, Friday in Riverside, Calif. First pitch starts at 6 p.m.
