Sacramento State looks to continue their offensive onslaught as they take on Northern Arizona University Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

The Hornets exploded for 512 yards last week against Northern Colorado in a 31-21 blowout. Sac State has now scored 155 points in their last four games going 3-1.

Junior quarterback Garrett Safron earned the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week award for his efforts against Northern Colorado.

Safron was 26-39 for 312-yards and three touchdowns.

“It’s obviously an accomplishment, but I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Safron said.

Safron now has 16 touchdowns on the season ranking him second in the Big Sky. Besides the quarterback play, there has been some other impressive performances from players on the offensive side of the ball.

Running backs, freshman Jordan Robinson and junior transfer Brandon Kellermann will once again be asked to carry the load after filling in for injured players, senior Ezekiel Graham (ankle) and freshman Demetrius Warren (shoulder).

Head coach Marshall Sperbeck has been impressed with the duo that ran for 154 yards and a touchdown.

“It was a nice 1-2 punch for us with those two guys coming in who really had never played,” Sperbeck said.

This weeks opponent, 19th ranked Northern Arizona, has an All-American running back in senior Zach Bauman. He has three consecutive 1000-yard seasons and currently has 422 yards rushing this season good for fourth in the Big Sky.

“We have to do a good job of corralling [Bauman] and making sure we’re not giving him those big lanes and opportunities to have those big cut back runs against us,” Sperbeck said.

Along with the running game, NAU has a thrifty defense. They have scored six defensive touchdowns from four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

“Defensively, they are one of the top in the conference,” Sperbeck said. “Offensively, obviously with [Bauman] being one of the top backs in Big Sky history, we got our hands full there as well.”

A key player to the Hornets offense this season has been junior wide receiver DeAndre Carter. Carter is tied for first in the FCS with ten receiving touchdowns.

Although starting conference play 2-0, Carter sees more potential with this team.

“Sky’s the limit for our team. We just gotta keep getting better every week,” Carter said. “We can be as good as we wanna be.”

Kickoff is at 6:05 p.m.
