Freshman midfielder Jennifer Lum’s first goal of the season in the 42nd minute against Fresno Pacific University Wednesday, turned out to be all the   Sacramento State women’s soccer team needed to nab its third win of the season.

Sacramento State (3-3) beat the Sunbirds 1-0 at Hornet Field.

Head coach Randy Dedini said although his team is back to a .500 record, the urgency from his team’s play was not there.

“The energy level was not there today with our team especially after we scored the goal,” Dedini said. “We have to be more urgent on both sides of the ball.”

Lum, who redshirted last season, was playing in the sixth game of her career.

“I put a lot of shots toward the goal today,” Lum said. “So it was nice to score my first goal of the season.”

Lum scored on an assist from senior midfielder Raylene Larot.

Larot said her practices during the week have been working in game situations.

“It is nice to see my effort on the soccer field paying off,” Larot said. “With this being my second assist this season so far.”

The Hornets were able to out shoot the Sunbirds 20-2 and hold the advantage in ball possession which put pressure on the Fresno Pacific backline.

Hornets junior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata had a quiet night saving the only two shots the Sunbirds sent her way.

Sac State will take the field again on Sunday at the University of Nevada at 4 p.m.
