Sacramento State softball fell short of being undefeated in the Mustang Classic with a 2-1 loss in the final game against Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Sac State was 4-0 in the first two days of the tournament, defeating Rutgers University, the University of Nevada, Cal Poly  and Northern Illinois University (13-5), but the Mustangs got the best of the Hornets the second time around.

Freshman catcher Kortney Solis hit a single in the top of the first inning, giving the chance for shortstop Yesenia Alcala to bring in the only run of the game.

After the first, Cal Poly pitcher Chloe Wurst finished giving up seven hits, while stricking out three Hornets in the process.

The two teams battled until the bottom of the fifth inning when Cal Poly’s Ashley Romano and Jillian Anderson hit back-to-back singles.

Although the loss broke the Hornets’ seven game winning streak, the team was able to improve its record to 12-6, the best record the team has had through 18 games since 2003.

The next time the Hornets take a step onto the field, it’ll be on its home field for the 21st annual Capital Classic. Fresno State, Kansas University, Saint Mary’s College and Texas State all will participate taking place on March 15-17.
