The Sacramento State women’s gymnastics team fell to conference foe San Jose State Sunday afternoon at the Hornets’ nest, 194.025-192.125.

Sac State has lost two straight and is 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans improved to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in WAC play.

After the first rotation, the Hornets were in striking distance of San Jose State, as they have been in most meets all season. Down just 0.15 of a point going into the uneven bars, the Hornets looked to close the gap but suffered costly falls in the uneven bars and balance beam routines.

Sac State picked up the pace on the floor routine by winning the fourth and final rotation 48.750-48.600.

The meet ended with the Spartans taking three out of four rotations, along with the San Jose State gymnasts taking first place in all four rotations and the all-around competition.

Senior captain Amanda Blauvelt said the team works hard to prepare but the focus is not there when it counts.

“It is disappointing to lose today. We had a lot of problems on the balance beam. The day before in practice we were really solid. We just need to work on some competition cues because we are able to do it in practice,” Blauvelt said.

“We were competitive in all of the other events but we just lost it on beam.”

Coach Kim Hughes said he will be looking to the upperclassmen to lead the team next time out.

“All of the graduating seniors have the potential to contribute to the team score as well as motivate fellow teammates to perform at their best. But the team as a whole is ready to break out,” Hughes said.

“No one is doing anything that they are not capable of. So all we can do is wait for all the pieces to come together.”

Sac State closes out the regular season in a tri-meet withBoise State andUCDavis next Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hornets’ Nest. This will be the final meet before the conference finals on March 19 in San Jose.
