The Sacramento State women’s soccer team defeated Portland State University 2-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Conference soccer championship today afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The win moves the Hornets into the championship match on Sunday Northern Arizona University.

For Sac State, this marks the second time it has made it to the championship round of the tournament since the 2007 appearance when the teamdefeated the University of Northern Colorado 3-0 to win the championship.

The Hornets were down early in the gameas the Vikings took little time scoring in the first half of play. Portland State forward Eryn Brown shot from 20 yards out to find the back of the net. The first half ended with the Vikings holding a 1-0 lead over the Hornets.

In the second half, Sac State kept Portland State at bay while scoring two unanswered goals. The first goal came just four minutes in as senior forward Leah Larot shot in the goal off of a Jordan Carlberg assist just off center from the goal box.

The second goal for Sac State came in the 78th minutes as forward Elece McBride received the assist from Kelsey O’Donnell after four straight attempts to score failed. O’Donnell cleared the ball to McBride, who then scored just off center from the Viking keeper Lainey Hulsizer.

Sac State will now have a day off to rest before Sundays match at 11 a.m.
