The Sacramento State men’s soccer team lost 4-1 to the No. 8 seeded UCLA in the second round of the NCAA College Cup on tonight at Drake stadium in Los Angeles.

The Hornets end their season with an overall record of 11-5-7.

This is the second straight time that the teams have met in the second round. Last year, Sac State defeated Loyola Marymount University 2-1 to face the Bruins. The team lost that match-up to UCLA 2-1.

The road to the College Cup was paved through the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament that was held at Sac State. The Hornets won three straight games and defeated the No. 2 seeded CSU Bakersfield 2-1 in overtime.

From there the Hornets hosted the first round of the College Cup at Hornet Soccer Field and were matched-up with Santa Clara University. In their first meeting of the season the game ended in a 1-1 tie. This time the results were different as Sac State defeated the Broncos 2-1.

In the match with UCLA, the first half saw a lot of ball movement but scoring for the first 45 minutes of play as both teams went to the locker room tied at 0-0.

It was a different story in the second half as the Bruins rattled off two unanswered goals in a span 12 minutes. The score stayed 2-0 until the 72nd minute when the Bruins found a way past Hornet keeper Cesar Castillo for the third goal of the game.

In the 84th minute, UCLA would score its fourth and final goal of the game as the score went to 4-0 Bruins with six minutes to play.

Sac State would deny the Bruins a shutout with less than three minutes to play when Ernesto Carranza took an assist from Adam Bettencourt to get the Hornets on the board late.

And that is how the game ended, with the score going to UCLA 4-1. The Bruins beat Sac State for the second time and will move on to play Dartmouth.

As for the Hornets, they will be graduating four key players but will have a solid returning class to make another run at the College Cup in the spring 2011 season.
