The Sacramento State men’s soccer team ended its second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference game with a 0-0 tie at Hornet Field against CSU, Bakersfield on Friday.

This is the team’s third tie in as many games and extends its unbeaten streak to eight games. After today’s tie, the team record now stands at 5-2-3 overall and 0-0-2 in the MPSF. For the Roadrunners, their record is now 6-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the MPSF.

Sac State was able to escape the first half with a 0-0 score, spending a majority of it defending the Roadrunners attack on offense.

Early in the second half the Roadrunners received a red card that allowed the Hornets offense to put the pressure on the opposing defense. Although the Hornets got more good shots off at the Roadrunners’ goalie, they failed to capitalize on the one-man advantage.

“We definitely started slow today and need to work on coming out stronger,” said junior forward Chris Bettencourt. “A tie isn’t bad, but we always want to come away with victories at home.”

Freshman goalie Cesar Castillo continue to impress by helping his team pitchit’s second shutout in a row.

“Getting the shutout is a great accomplishment for us,” Castillo said. “We just need to step up the intensity during this weeks practice and carry it over to next week’s game against Seattle.”

Head coach Michael Linenberger expressed his disappointment with his team’s third straight tie at home.

“I didn’t like much about today’s performance. The only positive thing that came out of today’s game was the shutout,” Linenberger said. “We don’t have much energy or emotion and need to bring those two aspects backs to our game. When you see our mid-fielders giving away 90 percent of their passes something is wrong because those are big-time players.”

The Hornets look to end their streak of ties with a victory on the road against Seattle University on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
