The Sacramento State women’s soccer team defeated Fresno State on Sunday 2-0 at Hornet Soccer Field.

With the win, the Hornets improve their record to 3-4-1 on the year, while Fresno State falls to 4-4-0.

Scoring happened late in the match as forward Leah Larot struck the first blow with an open-net goal at the 62:13 mark of the second half. The goal is her sixth of the season and 11th of her Hornet career.

Later in the half, forward Jordan Carlberg scored on an assist from defenseman Shea Roberts to the far post at the 73:02 mark.

Goalkeeper Savannah Abercrombie earned her school-record 19th career shutout as Hornet.

Abercrombie said the shutout was a total team effort as the Hornets were able to keep the Bulldogs’ off balance the whole game.

“We just stayed organized and stayed running with our marks. If the team lost their mark, I tried to pick it up for them,” Abercrombie said. “We were constantly working as a team and working hard the entire game because it was physical.”

Larot said she used the Bulldogs’ constant contact on defense against them as she was able to use her speed and get open late in the game.

“You have to get physical right back with them and despite all the physical play, I was still getting really good passes and crosses all first half,” Larot said. “And in the second half, it finally came through, but it was using the ball to find the free space to make the physical play not matter as much.”

Head coach Randy Dedini said the team needed to keep up the pulse of the game in order to throw off a Bulldog team that likes to play a measured attack.

“Today I thought we did a great job. Our game plan was to press them all over the field and keep the game up tempo, because they tend to want to slow it down and get behind the ball,” Dedini said. “The girls did a great job today, stepping up and being physical when they needed to.”

Sac State will be on the road next on Friday at the Seattle University Tournament, where it will face CSU Bakersfield and Seattle.
