Multi-Cultural Center ends semester by honoring community volunteers
May 6, 2010
The Sacramento State Multi-Cultural Center hosted the 2nd Annual All People’s Recognition Ceremony, honoring students, staff and faculty for serving the community.
The individuals honored at the ceremony were nominated by fellow staff, faculty or students on the Multi-Cultural Center website. The Multi-Cultural Center asked for nominations of people who have helped create an inclusive environment at Sac State and who work towards diversity and social justice in the community.
Elizabeth Redford, the newsletter and marketing intern at the Multi-Cultural Center, said that the event was a great end to a hectic semester.
“We are here tonight to acknowledge all the people who really make a difference at Sac State,” Redford said. “This is a great opportunity to emphasize that we are a community here at Sac State and we need to recognize the people who are making a difference.”
Jeanette Plascencia, coordinator of the Multi-Cultural Center, expressed the importance of the students being honored at the ceremony.
“These students being honored here tonight are the reason why all of us here at the Multi-Cultural Center work towards helping out the students and providing them with a place to study, relax and socialize,” Plascencia said.
Plascencia also encouraged the individuals to help bring in more students who might not know about the services provided by the Multi-Cultural Center.
“We are able to have a job here because of all the devoted students who are part of our community,” Plascencia said. “Students who are dealing with issues or just want to join our family should join us.”
Jessica Castellon, a social justice major and intern in the Multi-Cultural center, was among the students recognized at the ceremony.
“The Multi-Cultural Center has been a place where I can come to clear my head and focus,” Castellon said. “The atmosphere is great and I enjoy the group of people I work with.”
The Multi-Cultural center offers a lot of opportunities for students looking to get involved in the Sac State community. Students interested in leadership opportunities can apply for an internship, volunteer, and personal development programs.
“Throughout the semester, we have a lot of events and opportunities going on and we want to encourage all students to come out and see what we’re all about,” Redford said. “There is no place like this anywhere on campus, and we are proud of that.”Ricky Alejandro can be reached at [email protected].
