The Sacramento State softball team split a pair of doubleheaders with Pacific Coast Softball Conference-rival University of San Diego on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hornets won the second game on each day, defeating the Toreros 4-0 and 1-0. Both games were complete game-shutouts by pitcher Shelby Voelz, who improved to 8-13 on the season.

Shortstop Emily McCormick, playing in place of the injured Desiree Beltran, hit a solo home run for the only scoring of the second game on Sunday.

Megan Schaefer pitched six innings of two-run ball in the first game of the series, but San Diego’s Jennifer Ellenbeck silenced the Hornets’ bats, as the Toreros won 2-1 in game one on Saturday.

Game one on Sunday was the highest-scoring affair between the teams, as they totaled 10 runs. San Diego got down 3-0 after three innings only to storm back with three runs in the fourth inning and a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

The Hornets move to 15-26 overall and 5-2 in conference play. San Diego is now 13-22 overall and 2-4 in conference.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Saint Mary’s College for back-to-back doubleheaders. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. each day.
