Women’s basketball notches school-record eighth conference win

The Sacramento State women’s basketball earned a school record eighth conference victory with a 104-98 victory at Northern Arizona on Thursday.

With the win the Hornets improve their record to 13-13 overall and 8-5 in Big Sky play. The loss drops the Lumberjacks to 5-22 overall and 3-11 in the conference.

The first half was a constant battle for Hornets where there were 15 lead changes, with the Lumberjacks taking their largest lead with 13:55 remaining in the first half, 18-12.

Senior forward, Charday Hunt scored 20 points during the first half, .

Northern Arizona’s freshman Amy Patton answered Hunt with 19 points of her own in the first half.

The Lumberjacks finished the first half off clinging to a small lead, 56-55.

Less than two minutes in to the second half, Emily Christensen had a layup to put the Hornets ahead, 60-59.

The Hornets began to heat up as they went on a 21-8 run and led by as many as 15.

During the 21-8 run, Tika Koshiyama-Diaz scored eight points for the Hornets.

The Lumberjacks came back swinging as they went on a 24-10 run of their own, cutting the lead to 99-98 with just 1:09 left on the clock.

However, the Lumberjacks started to miss their chances and the Hornets put away Northern Arizona, 104-98.

Hunt finished the night with five assist and a career high 32 points.

Freshman Kylie Kuhns scored her third double-double of the season as she tied her career-high 14 points.

Senior guard Ashley Garcia finished the game with 11 points and Edwards finished the night with 6 rebounds.

Edwards is third Hornet to have over 750 rebounds, putting her in the 750 club, along with Kristi Ryan (1991-94) and Heidi Carrol (1983-86).

The Hornets will face the Northern Colorado Bears in Greeley, Colo. on Saturday at 6:05pm.
