Women’s basketball falls to Aggies in close game

In a game filled with comeback efforts and a confusing moment from the scores table, Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell short to the UC Davis Aggies 72-64 Sunday at the Pavilion in Davis. The Hornets dropped down to a 2-7 overall record this season following the loss, while UC Davis improved to 6-3. The first half did not start well for the Hornets as the Aggies led 9-0 with 15:49 left on the clock.

The momentum shifted several times during the rest of the half with the score as close as 14-11 for the Aggies with 10:21 left in the half. By halftime, the Hornets were down 32-24. During the middle of the second half, there was confusion on the scores table as freshman forward Natasha Torgerson was labeled incorrectly by Sac State as #34 on the roster sheet, when her correct number is #44.

The Hornets received a technical foul because of this mistake, but fortunately for the Hornets, Davis failed to take advantage of the foul and missed both of the free-throw attempts. During the second half, Sac State did attempt a late comeback when the Hornets went on a 14-6 run during the last 2:30 of the half.

With 0:25 left in the game, the Aggies lead was cut to 68-64, but UC Davis scored four quick points to end the game with the final score of 72-64. Five Hornet players scored in double figures, including senior forward Charday Hunt, who led the team with 14 points.

Junior guard Tika Koshiyama-Diaz scored 12 points and had a career-high eight assist for the game. Junior guard Jasmine Cannady and junior forward Emily Christensen each had 11 points while senior guard Ashley Garcia had 10 points of the Hornet bench. Cannady said that the team’s struggles during the first half did not help the Hornets. “I think because we struggled so much with the defense that they were running in the first half that it hurt us in the second half,” Cannady said. “If we played like we did during the second half in the first half, then we would have been fine.” Hunt said that the team’s confidence level is what made the difference during the second half of the game. “We weren’t as timid in the zone as we were in the first half,” Hunt said. “If we started out like that, we probably would have came out with a win. We started playing with a sense of urgency in the second half that we should have had during the first.” Head coach Jamie Craighead said that the improvement with the Hornets’ offense helped in the second half. “We shot the ball a lot better,” Craighead said. “In order for us to run our full-court pressure stuff, we have to make shots. I thought that was what worked well for us is the fact that we knocked down shots and get them to turn the ball over.”
