The suspect in the homicide of a Sacramento State student has been identified by police as 19-year-old Quran Jones.

Jones was shot by police after allegedly charging them with a knife. Police would not verify how many shots were fired.

“He will be facing one open count of homicide, and one count of attempted murder of a police officer,” said Sgt. Joe Green of the Sacramento State Police Department at a press conference Wednesday night.

A victim died after being allegedly beaten by a baseball bat. The suspected attacker remains hospitalized, authorities said, but has gone through surgery and is in stable condition.

Jones is being held under guard at the UC Davis Medical Center.

The relationship between the two men is still not known.

According to Sacramento Police, officers responded to a call in the American River Courtyards residence hall at approximately 2:10 p.m today.

Norm Leong, spokesperson for the Sacramento Police, said officers responded to a Sac State officer-involved shooting.

Police said when they arrived the victim was on the ground, suffering from trauma that may have been caused from a baseball bat.

Public Affairs Associate Vice President Gloria Moraga confirmed that two people were taken away by ambulance.

She added that a few students reported a man angrily breaking windows. Officers then approached the room, and were charged at. At least one officer fired a pepperball gun.

Because the pepperball gun was not successful, police then shot at the suspect.

Moraga also announced that students who currently live on the floor where the incident occurred will be relocated for the evening for however long the investigation lasts.

Students at the Courtyards were shocked and frightened but said everything seemed under control.

“I was terrified, scared, worried, nervous, all of the above,” said Ashjone McPherson, sophomore speech pathology major.

Cole Mayer, a State Hornet reporter and journalism major at Sac State who lives at the Courtyards, said he is worried about returning home tonight.

“It’s kind of freaky, I’m glad I wasn’t in the building at the time,” Mayer said. “I’m probably going to go back to my home home instead.” There is no real reason to stay here; especially if there was a shooting.”

Campus is still open and all classes are being held as usual.
