Sacramento State’s men’s soccer team won its second conference game of the weekend today against the University of Denver 2-1.

Sac State’s junior midfielder Fernando Cabadas got the game’s first shot on goal, but the ball missed after hitting the goal post.

The Hornets defended well against Denver and kept the Pioneers scoreless until a failed clearance shot deflected off of junior midfielder Diego Marroquin and went into the goal.

The Hornets eventually tied the game 1-1 on a corner kick from Cabadas, which was headed in by senior defender David von Stockhausen.

Sac State had a one man advantage for the last 11:32 minutes of the first half, after Denver’s Blake Shannon received a red card for getting two yellow cards within 14 seconds of each other.

The Hornets took the lead for the first time in the second half when Ernesto Carranza scored an unassisted goal on a left footed shot from 10 yards out.

After Carranza’s goal, the Hornets shut down Denver’s offense allowing only two shots on goal during the rest of the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Oliver finished the match with four saves.

“The good thing is that we came out with a victory, which is what we wanted. We played good soccer for much of the game,” Carranza said.

The Hornets ended the game out shooting Denver 20 to 11.
