MOJO: Free Kayaking

Students could rent a kayak, canoe or hydro bike for free today at the Sac State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma. Nicole McCall, facilities and dock master at the center, said not as many students came out as she had hoped.

“We’d like to see all our boats in the water,” McCall said. “We would love to see students come out here and check it out. If students take advantage of it, they will want to come out more often.”

McCall said many students were likely in class today or could not make the drive out to the lake.

Michelle Andrew, counselor education grad student at Sac State, came out to take advantage of the opportunity.

“I like to come out and bird watch along the shore,” Andrew said. “It’s hot today, but it’s much cooler on the water.”

McCall said kayaking is an excellent physical activity since rowing involves balance, arm, leg and core muscles.

Normal prices to rent a kayak from the Center is $7 for students and $9 for the general public. The center hosts a free day the first week of every semester.
