The Sacramento State women’s rowing team was denied a third consecutive Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association title on Sunday when UC Davis won the championships. The Hornets’ varsity four won a gold medal and the second varsity eight won a bronze model.

The varsity four rowed the 2,000-meter race in 7:35.7, nearly 10 seconds faster than Gonzaga (7:45.4). The second varsity eight finished the race in 7:09.8, behind Gonzaga (7:00.2), who took the top spot.

After Saturday’s events, all six of Sac State’s boats advanced to the grand finals in the top three, but were unable to hit the top speeds in the water to bring home its third title in a row.

Sac State’s pair and novice lightweight four placed fourth, the novice eight placed fifth and the varsity eight placed sixth. After the meet, senior Aimee Chenard and junior Anne Morrison were named to the all-WIRA second team. Chenard competed in the varsity eight and varsity four, both times positioned at stroke. Morrison competed in the second varsity eight at stroke.

The Hornets will compete in the Dad Vail Regatta on Friday and Saturday in Philadelphia.
