The Sacramento State Hornets hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to San Jose to take on the Spartans of San Jose State.

Already playing them multiple times this season, the Hornets failed to catch on to the style of play the Spartans use, falling 4-3 in a non-conference game.

With the loss Sac State dropped to 18-12 on the season and had its six-game winning streak snapped in the process. San Jose State evened its record at 19-19.

Veteran pitcher Kayla Meeks got the start for the Hornets. Meeks failed to get out of the second inning allowing five hits and all of the Spartans’ runs.

Sophomore Brittani Clifford was brought in by Hornets coach Kathy Strahan to relieve Meeks and was successful in keeping the Spartans at bay.

Sac State was scoreless until the fifth inning, when it scored all three of its runs. All of the Hornets’ runs in the contest were unearned and were scored via wild pitches by Spartan starter, Roxanne Bejarano.

Bejarano pitched seven strong innings, allowing the three unearned runs with six hits.

Hornet shortstop Amy Tompkins was the only bright spot for the team, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

The Hornets take on the Stanford Cardinal on April 2 at Shea Stadium; first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
