Hornets can’t keep up with New Mexico State’s power display, lose 7-4

It was a warm day at Hornet Field as the New Mexico State Aggies used the long ball to beat Sacramento State 7-4 today in the first game of a four-game WAC series. The Aggies had 12 hits in the game, four of which were home runs, as they improved their conference record to 6-11 (19-25 overall) while the Hornets dropped to 10-6 in the WAC (19-20 overall).

Hornet senior right fielder Ryan Blair had three of the team’s 14 hits in the game. He laced two doubles and scored a run.

“We just didn’t hit when we had runners in scoring position,” Blair said. “We came out of the gates a little slow? we hit the ball alright, it just took us a while to get going. We kind of dug ourselves a hole.”

“We need to attack more fastballs and be ready to go.”

Blair said the Hornets might have underestimated the Aggies, who sit at the bottom of the WAC.

“Just because they’re in the bottom of the rankings doesn’t mean we should take them lightly,” Blair said.

The Hornets will be back on the diamond to take on the Aggies in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hornet Field.
