Women’s tennis edges Nevada 4-3

The No. 32 ranked Sacramento State women’s tennis team defeated Nevada 4-3 Saturday in a neutral site contest in Oregon.

After winning the doubles point with victories from juniors Luba Schifris and Karina Jarlkaganova in the No. 2 match and sophomore Aileen Tsan and junior Anastassia Lyssenko in the No. 3 match, the teams split the singles points.

The Hornets’ sophomore Katrina Zheltova, ranked No.57, defeated No. 40 ranked Maria Mizyuk 6-4, 6-3. Lyssenko defeated Florence De Vrye 6-0, 6-2 and Jarlkganova won her match when Laetitia Tan retired after winning the first set over Jarlkaganova 6-1.

The win improves the Hornets’ record to 11-1 overall and the team won its seventh straight victory, the most consecutive wins since 2005 when it won eight in a row.

Action resumes at 12 p.m. Sunday against Oregon.
